We are deeply disappointed by the Detroit MLK Day Committee’s decision to award Students for Justice in Palestine at Wayne State University. This choice fundamentally misrepresents Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy. Dr. King was a staunch Zionist who famously stated, “When people criticize Zionists, they mean Jews. You’re talking antisemitism.” SJP’s anti-Israel stance directly contradicts Dr. King’s vision of peace and understanding. We call on the committee to reconsider this misguided award and honor organizations that truly embody Dr. King’s ideals of justice and equality.
